Grim situation along Assam-Arunachal border, 1 killed two injured

GUWAHATI: The ‘World Environment Day’ celebrations on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border turned grim when gunmen shot dead a youth near Panbari village in Dhemaji district on Monday.
According to reports, the deceased, identified as Boga Chutia from Dhemaji, was part of a group planting saplings in the border area to commemorate ‘World Environment Day’ when he came under fire from miscreants. Two others, identified as Pushp Gogoi and Monitor Gogoi, were taken to hospital in a critical condition.
Condemning the incident, locals, including leaders of an influential student body, have urged governments to speed up border talks for an amicable solution.

Assam Jatiya Yuba Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP) leader Ratul Borgohain said, “Tensions are running high near the border at Panbari in Jairampur.”
Despite several complaints, the district administration has failed to take any concrete steps. It seems that today’s incident happened due to the incompetence of the district administration.
We request the district administration and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to resolve this issue after consulting the local people,” he added, adding, “If Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu wants to have cordial relations with us, So they should identify the wrong doers and punish them. That’s according to the law.”
When asked about the incident, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that an investigation would be initiated by the district administration and the police.
“We have not been able to demarcate till date. Usually these attacks are not carried out by neighboring states. Instead, they are carried out by civilians over land disputes. The police will start an investigation and take action accordingly. Details of the case, like the background, will emerge during the investigation,” said Sarma.
