LAKHIMPUR: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has strongly opposed the distribution of science and mathematics textbooks in English to Class VI students studying in vernacular medium government schools, which has created an uproar in the state.
The state’s apex student body has termed it an ‘irreversible move’ by the Assam government to destroy Assamese, Bodo and all other vernacular medium schools. AASU has criticized the government’s move which is against the spirit of the ‘National Education Policy-2020’ and has demanded that the move be rolled back as soon as possible.
In support of the demand, the Lakhimpur district unit of the organization launched a protest program in North Lakhimpur town on Saturday. In this regard, AASU members led by Lakhimpur district president Samantha Neog and general secretary Swaraj Sankar Gogoi took out a protest rally covering the district headquarters.During the demonstration, the protesters raised slogans to save the local medium schools. The organization demanded the government to work for the development and promotion of Assamese and other local languages of the state.
