In clashes-hit Manipur ban on internet extended till October 31

Manipur: In response to reports of communal tension and possible misuse of social media platforms, the Manipur government has taken a drastic step by suspending mobile data and internet services in the state for five more days. The move is aimed at curbing the spread of inflammatory material and false rumours, which pose a threat to public peace and communal harmony.

In a recent order issued by the Director General of Police, it was highlighted that there has been an increase in clashes between volunteers and youths from large communities living in the state, resulting in the targeting of houses and premises. Actions were taken. Officials fear that anti-social elements may use social media platforms to spread hate speech, incite public unrest and worsen the law and order situation in Manipur.

The continued apprehension of possible loss of life, damage to public and private property and widespread disruption of public order and communal harmony calls for immediate action. In an effort to curb the spread of misinformation and false rumors through various social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, mobile data services and internet/data services, including Reliance Jio Fiber, Airtel Xtreme Black, BSNL,FTTH a broadband connection like and internet/data services through VSATs of BharatNet Phase II have been suspended.
This suspension order comes under the powers conferred under Rule 2 of the Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules, 2017. Its objective is to counter the activities of anti-national and anti-social elements while maintaining peace, communal harmony, and protection of public and private property from acts of arson and vandalism.
This order, which is effective immediately, is an extension of the previous office order and is issued in the interest of public safety and maintenance of law and order. It will remain in effect for the next five days, during which mobile data services, internet/data services, and broadband connections will be suspended in the Manipur territorial jurisdiction.
