The Voice of People’s Party (VPP) protested and staged a walkout against Meghalaya Governor Phagu Chauhan’s speech in Hindi on March 20.
VPP president Ardent Basaiawmoit and three other party MLAs walked out, ignoring the explanation by Speaker Thomas A Sangma and Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma that the governor had ‘limitations’ in reading English. The speech translated from is distributed.
A Hindi-speaking governor has been sent to the state. We do not understand what they are talking about so we will walk out,” Ardent told the assembly.
“We do not want to be part of this process and those who do not feel insulted can attend the House. We don’t want to be a part of that,” he added.
Opposition leaders said that English is the official language of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
Notably, the Chief Minister of Meghalaya tried to explain the reason for the Governor’s speech in Hindi, but the opposition MLAs did not pay attention.
“I request all members to kindly bear with the House and show decorum in the House and not make noise when the Governor is reading the address.”
