Assam to bring back Pass-fail system
Guwahati: The Assam to bring back Pass-fail system and decided to conduct Class 5 and 8 examinations of all schools in the state and failing students will be placed in the same class, officials said on Friday.
The decision was taken at a state cabinet meeting in Guwahati on Friday.
“The Right to Education Act, 2009 had provision for exams from class one, but failed students could not be placed in the same class,” said Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu.
“In 2019, the Assam government amended the act and accordingly the state cabinet has decided to conduct the annual examinations for class V and VIII students today. Failing students will be placed in the same class,” he added. .
Unsuccessful candidates will be given a second chance to appear in a special examination which will be held after a gap of two months after the results of the annual examination.
Teachers will conduct remedial classes for them. “However, candidates who fail even in this examination will have to study in the same class for another year,” Pegu added.
The Assam Education Minister added that it is widely believed that the absence of a pass-fail structure in the lower and primary sections has adversely affected the education system in the state.
So the government has decided to bring it back to the school level.
