West Khasi Hills: The Meghalaya Police on May 28 successfully foiled a plot to reorganize the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) and arrested three suspects.
The action was initiated following a WhatsApp message claiming to be the new Chief Executive Director of GNLA in Rengdim, West Khasi Hills along with training 500 GNLA members.
The investigation led to the identification of those allegedly involved in the regrouping. The accused have been identified as Namchang Ch Momin alias Jingjang D. Shira, Adot M. Sangma and Silwit R. Marak.
Immediate action was taken by launching a counter-insurgency operation, which led to the surrender of the three men at Kherapara outpost.
During subsequent interviews and a house search at Namchang Ch Momin’s residence, incriminating materials such as camouflage uniforms and shoes were discovered and seized by the police.
Investigations revealed that the suspects aimed to create fear among the general public and extort money from businessmen, without any real efforts to reorganize the GNLA.
An investigation is ongoing to uncover the full conspiracy and determine if more people were involved.
