Global Naga Forum observed Matikhrü massacre as Black Day

Kohima: The Global Naga Forum (GNF) held an online event via Zoom on September 6 to mark the anniversary of the Matikhrü massacre, observed as Pochury Black Day.

The commemoration began with a prayer by Riejusie Nyusou, Catechist at St. Michael’s Church, Khimiau village. Akho S. Leyri, President of the Pochury Institute of Literature (PIL), reflected on the tragic events of September 6, 1960, when the 16th Punjab Regiment of the Indian Army launched a brutal attack on Matikhrü village.

Leyri recounted the suffering inflicted on the village. He praised the GNF for organizing the event and called for unity among the Nagas to work towards a better future.

Jeffrey Leyri, President of the Pochury Students’ Union, paid tribute to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the Naga cause. Rev. Zhihuotho Katiry, a survivor of the massacre who was seven years old at the time, shared his harrowing memories, including the loss of his father. He highlighted the collective trauma experienced by many families on that fateful day.

The event received messages of solidarity from various organizations, including the Naga Hoho, Naga Mother’s Association, Naga Students’ Federation, and Naga People’s Movement for Human Rights. They underscored the significance of remembering the sacrifices made during the Naga struggle for self-determination.

The programme, chaired by Kilentoli Jamir, featured a welcome address by Chuba Ozukum, Convenor of GNF, and special performances by the Pochury Women Organisation and Thotmung Muivah.

Additionally, Prof. Rosemary Dzuvichu and Dr. Theyiesinuo Keditsu announced the winners of the essay competition and poem recitation held on Naga Independence Day, August 14. Dr. Keditsu encouraged continued storytelling among all generations.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Miriam Rengma, Joint Treasurer of GNF.
