Guwahati: Jal Shakti Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Monday reviewed the progress of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) and Swachh Bharat Mission Grameen (SBM-G) North East region at Radisson Blue Hotel in Guwahati.
During a meeting, Shekhawat examined the status of JJM in the states of the North East region. He reviewed the implementation, operation and maintenance of JJM as well as the quality of schemes handed over to Panchayats. Issues under the purview of SBM-G, status of ODF (Open Defecation Free) plus scheme and waste management in villages were also discussed.
Appreciating the remarkable progress of the North-Eastern states in implementing Jal Jeevan Mission policies, the Union Minister emphasized Assam’s commitment to the cause. “A state like Assam which started with 1 per cent growth is now touching 50 per cent growth under the Jal Jeevan Mission,” said Shekhawat.
Shekhawat encouraged the northeastern states to accelerate their development and achieve 100 per cent development under the Jal Jeevan Mission by the end of 2024. Jal Dutt Program in Assam.
The Jal Dutt program is a unique initiative of JJM in Assam in which students are encouraged to educate the rural population about the importance of clean drinking water and its management. This program not only prepares the students of class VIII to XII on safe management of water and sanitation, but also aims to train them in assessing the functionality of water pipelines.
The Union Minister also launched a handbook on best practices of SBM-G, Assam in the presence of dignitaries and delegates.
Assam PHE Minister Jayanta Mulla Baruah was among the many dignitaries who attended the meeting. He welcomed the Union Minister and congratulated him.
“It is indeed a moment of pride and honor to have the Union Minister in our midst,” Baruah said, adding that Shekhawat exchanged views on the “way forward to fulfill the visionary goals” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. What did you think?
It may be noted that Golpara and Barpeta districts have secured the second and third position respectively in the category of “fastest moving actors” among the aspiring districts for their efforts under the Jal Jeevan Mission. The Assam PHED Minister congratulated the districts and encouraged them to continue their efforts.
Union Minister Shekhawat also chaired the meeting of the 12th High Power Review Board of Brahmaputra Board in Guwahati along with Assam Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika.
After the meeting, Shekhawat said that the North East Water Resources Management Authority was envisaged to find a comprehensive solution to the problem of water crisis on one hand and flood on the other. He further said that a body will be constituted as soon as the approval is received from the Parliament. He also said that water purification in rural areas will be the top priority under JJM.
The meeting was also attended by the Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Kailash Choudhary and other representative ministers of North Eastern states.
