From riot-hit Manipur over 10,000 displaced to Assam, Mizoram

GUWAHATI: Over 10,700 people from riot-hit Manipur have taken refuge in parts of Mizoram and southern Assam after being displaced from their homes.

A total of 9,501 tribal people from Manipur have taken shelter in various districts of Mizoram and about 90% of the displaced people have taken shelter in three districts of Mizoram – Aizawl, Kolasib and Saitual, an official in Aizawl said.
Kolasib district adjoining South Assam has the highest number of IDPs at 3,481, followed by 3,157 in Aizawl and 2,390 in Saitual district.

The Mizoram government has also constituted a committee under the chairmanship of Home Minister Lalchamliana to deal with various issues of people seeking asylum in the state.
“Representatives of the Young Mizo Association (YMA), the state’s largest NGO, the Mizoram Journalists Association and the Mizoram Kohhran Hruaitute Committee (MKHC), a committee of church leaders, several ministers on the committee. included, which was formed after the direction of this committee. Meanwhile, about 1,200 people from riot-hit Manipur, including men, women and children, are sheltered in 12 different camps in Assam’s Cachar district, where the state government is providing them with food and shelter.
