Imphal: Manipur Police along with Assam Rifles arrested two alleged drugs smuggler and recovered 3.710 kg brown sugar and 20 kg opium worth Rs 8.42 crore in international market in separate operations.
Officials said the recoveries were made in the southern part of Manipur bordering Myanmar.
Based on specific information, a joint team of Assam Rifles and Manipur Police launched an operation and intercepted a vehicle near Chamol village in Tengnoupal district.
On thorough checking of the vehicle, 3.710 kg of brown sugar packed in 88 cases of soap was recovered from the floor panel of the vehicle.
The value of seized drugs is estimated to be Rs 7.42 crore.
The arrested person has been identified as Daniel Lalngaisang Chongloi (20) from Moreh and the seized drugs have been handed over to Tengnoupal Police Station in Manipur for further investigation.
In a separate incident, a mobile vehicle check post was set up at Songkhom village in Manipur’s Chandel district after receiving information about the movement of contraband.
During the search operation at the mobile vehicle check post, 20 kg of opium was recovered from a person.
The seized opium is estimated to be worth Rs 1 crore in the international market.
The recovered items along with the smuggler were handed over to Chakpikarong Police Station for further investigation.
