Imphal: The Assam Rifles has been withdrawn from the central combat zone between Manipur’s Bishnupur and Churachandpur districts, with effect from Monday.
The decision was taken following demands by several women’s vigilante groups, who demanded the state to withdraw the Assam Rifles after paramilitary forces fired blanks and fired teargas shells at a group of women protesters on August 3. what was More than 50 women were injured in the incident.
In an order issued on Monday, Manipur Police Additional Director General (Law and Order) L Lailun said that the Manipur Police and CRPF are now responsible for monitoring the check post at Moirang Lamkhai on Bishnupur to Kangvai road.
“In part notification of office order dated 3rd August, 2023, the Naka/check post at Moirang Lamkhai on Bishnupur to Kangvai road has been replaced by 9 Assam Rifles under Civil Police and CRPF (128 Battalion of CRPF). The arrangement will be kept in place with immediate effect and until further orders,” the order said.
The return of the Assam Rifles comes at a time when the state is witnessing ethnic clashes between the Meiteis and Kuki communities.
More than 160 people have been killed and more than 60,000 displaced in the violence so far.
