Guwahati: Assam Police on Monday arrested controversial Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) contractor Nirmal Kumar Mur from Guwahati.
According to sources, Nirmal went into hiding after he allegedly beat up Assam Jatabadi Yuba Chitra Parishad (AJYCP) Mahmora unit member Lakhi Das Panikar last April 27, 2023.

I am a Ready to go to JYCP office and apologize for this. Thank you, Jai Aai Axom,” Nirmal said in his video message.
Notably, the Sonari police had earlier summoned the controversial leader to the Kakotibari police station in Charaideo district based on a police complaint by an AJYCP leader. However, after questioning, he was allowed to leave the police station.
The incident sparked outrage among AJYCP members in Sivasagar town on Sunday. A group of AJYCP members also protested outside the JJM contractor’s residence in Sivasagar.
Reacting to this, AJYCP General Secretary Palash Changmai told the media, “Controversial JJM contractor Nirmal Mur had slapped AJYCP regional general secretary from Mahmora unit. Filed a complaint in Kakotibari police station. On the basis of FIR, Sonari police summoned the contractor but later he was let go which we condemn. Which is a crime committed by the Assam Police itself.
Changmai also alleged that the first offense of Nirmal, a non-Assamese contractor, was that he had raised his hand against a regional leader of the AJYCP. “Secondly, he is involved in embezzlement of funds under the Jal Jeevan Mission, a flagship program under the Government of India, for which the police could have booked a non-bailable case against him, but they did not. Thirdly, he made our threatened to shoot the leader with a gun. Crucially, he tried to mislead the police by filing a fake complaint against the AJYCP stating that the organization had Demanded money.
