Chabua: A suspected ULFA-I freedom-fighter surrendered before the Assam Police on February 22 in Chabua after informing his family.
The freedom-fighter, identified as Ranjit Asom alias Bikram Gogoi, informed his family about the decision to surrender after which he surrendered himself to the police.
The ULFA-I fighter is currently in police custody.
Recently, a senior ULFA-I fighter identified as Udai Axom was involved in a gun battle between Assam Police and United Liberation Front of Assam-Independent (ULFA-I) fighters in Margherita in early February. The latter was killed in an encounter in Assam.
According to initial reports, the incident took place at Tikka Mulung Parbat near Margherita town in Tinsukia district of Assam.
An operation was launched and a team of police officers went to nab a group of ULFA-I fighters who were hiding there after their presence was tipped off.
However, on reaching the spot, there was an exchange of fire between the two sides, in which a fighter of ULFA-I, identified as Udai Axom, was reportedly killed in the exchange. According to reports, the firing started in the early hours of this morning.
According to reports, a self-proclaimed Sergeant Major of the rebel group, Udai Axom, is said to be hiding in Margherita with a group of cadres.
According to reports, Udai Axom left home in 2012 and became a staunch ULFA-I fighter in 2013. Udai Axom is said to be behind all major extortion cases in Upper Assam. Sources claim that the ULFA-I cadre was also involved in the recent extortion case in which ULFA-I fighter Udai Axom was the right-hand man of Rupam Axom (the extortion expert).
