Aizawl: Amidst speculations about shifting the base of Assam Rifles, Director General of Paramilitary Forces Lt Gen Pradeep Chandran Nair has said that they will shift their base from Aizawl to the newly inaugurated Battalion Headquarters Complex, Zokhawsang in a phased manner.
Nair clarified that the phased transfer of the Assam Rifles base from Aizawl to Zokhawsang will take place after the state government provides all basic needs and resolves all issues related to the land currently occupied by paramilitary forces.
He also said that the paramilitary force would retain a portion of land to serve the people through legislation to maintain army presence at the existing battalion headquarters.
Recently, the DG also felicitated eight personnel of the Assam Rifles for their outstanding performance during operations against smuggling of contraband, drugs and war-like stores in the border area and Aizawl.
Soldiers felicitated the DGAR with appreciation cards for dedication and devotion to duty.
The General Officer appreciated the commendable work done by all the battalions of the sector in securing the border and controlling the ongoing drug menace in the state and encouraged the soldiers to work with the same courage, enthusiasm and passion.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the headquarters complex of the Assam Rifles at Zokhawsang, about 15 km east of Aizawl, on April 1.
Shah had also said that the paramilitary force headquarters would be shifted from Aizawl to Zokhawsang as per the agreement between the Center and the state government.
Although Shah did not mention a timeline during his public address, he reportedly told civil society groups that the Assam Rifles would be transferred within 3 months.
Meanwhile, state home department officials said that the new headquarters complex of the Assam Rifles Battalion has been provided with all the necessary basic requirements.
Last month, Home Minister Lalchamalin also informed the state assembly that the state government on its part has fulfilled all the requirements it should for the new headquarters of the Assam Rifles at Zokhawsang.
