Williamnagar: The election feeling, which had died down during the nomination period, revived in Williamnagar town this afternoon, with each candidate trying to outdo the other to show their support. It looked like a full-fledged festival with its candidates drumming through the streets of the city.
A total of 11 candidates from three constituencies of EGH filed their nomination papers while their supporters thronged the ground next to the Deputy Commissioner’s office. A total of 3 candidates from BJP, Congress and TMC have filed their nomination papers for the Williamnagar seat along with JDU candidate Robinus T Sangma and independent candidate Rudreshwar Ch Momin. All the candidate parties came with a large number of their supporters.
For BJP, Raknang Ch Marak (Williamnagar), Thomas Marak (Songsak) and Raphius Sangma (Rongjeng) have filed their nomination papers while Congress leaders, Deborah Marak (Williamnagar), Champion Sangma (Songsak) and Jibing Sangma have filed their nomination papers. Rongjeng completed his nomination rites. The TMC saw the nomination of former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma (Songsak), Alphonsiush Marak (Williamnagar) and former Rongjeng MLA Sengnam Marak.
“This time the contest in Songsak will be between me and Nihim D Shira (NPP candidate). Mukal Sangma will not matter,” Champion said while talking to reporters after filing his nomination.
When asked what ails his constituency, Champion blamed both Mukul and Nihim for the region’s underdevelopment.
Champion felt that “nothing has been done in terms of development for the last 15 years and I am sure people will elect me for the betterment of this place.”
Rudreshwar, an independent who has thousands of supporters, said he was acting on the people’s mandate.
“Ever since I started campaigning I have received a lot of support from the people of Williamnagar and today’s support proves why I am confident of victory in the upcoming elections. My agenda for the elections is The agenda is what the people have given me and I will continue to do so for the sake of the people of my constituency,” said Rudreshwar.
For Thomas Marak (BJP, Songsak), the state of Meghalaya has not developed despite the BJP government providing huge schemes for the state.
“People have understood that the negative propaganda against the BJP is completely wrong and we want to ensure that these programs reach the people of the state – without fail. The work done for the poor is enough to show how much we are pro-poor. We will form the government with more than 30 seats in the coming elections,” said Thomas.
BJP’s Assam spokesperson Akshay Rajkhowa said they will form the next government whatever, adding that a star-studded line-up of BJP leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, With the Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma. After next week, many other elections are going down in the state.
Congress’s Deborah Marak expressed her confidence in winning the election, adding that the biggest threat would be to NPP’s Marcuise Marak.
The number of Congress supporters was more than 5-6 thousand, their procession used to shout slogans for their leaders.
Last in the nomination hall were TMC leaders supported by a sea of white TMC caps who literally had to allow more space due to numbers as well as the presence of other party supporters. His number of supporters was the highest during the day.
The last person to come out of the nomination hall was TMC’s Williamnagar candidate, Alphonsiush, to loud applause. After a formal interview with the media fraternity, Mukul along with TMC supporters went near Alphonsiush’s house where another meeting was held.
This is how elections are conducted in Williamnagar. A show of support, noise and a carnival atmosphere are essential during nominations. However, no untoward incident was ever reported even when supporters of one party stepped on the toes of the other. It is always peaceful,” said a resident who came to watch the show unfold.
Traffic, though slow, was flowing normally throughout the duration and only the DC office road was closed to allow for smooth nominations.
