Bishnupur: Four Manipur commandos were injured in an attack by Kuki militants at Tangjeng under Kumbi assembly constituency in Bishnupur district on Wednesday.
The incident took place around 1.30 pm when a team of six commando personnel from Bishnupur district entered Tangjeng to take control of the area.
The injured have been identified as Sub-Inspector Gyanendro Salam (40), son of late S Mangijao of MoirangKhunou in Bishnupur district. Elialong, 34, son of Namheiting of Senapati Kenalu; Huidrom Gunamani, 44, son of H. Angouba of Yumnam Huidrom and Janaranjan, 27, son of Ranjit of Laipham Khunjao Awang Leikai.
Police informed that the commando team was led by SI Gyanendro. When they reached Tangjeng, some suspected Kuki militants attacked their bulletproof vehicle with landmines. The personnel were sitting in the back of the vehicle when the mine exploded. The splinters penetrated the vehicle and injured the personnel.
Gyanendro injured his right calf and foot. Elialong suffered injuries to her right ankle and calf while Gunamani sustained a minor injury to her right thigh.
Gyanendro and Elialong were admitted to Advanced Hospital for treatment. The hospital administration said that both the injured are undergoing treatment. As Ganamani sustained minor injuries, he was admitted to the Primary Health Centre, Moirang. Commando officer Janranjan has been admitted to Rams Hospital.
Reliable sources reported that the People’s Defense Force (PDF), a Myanmar-based militant group, and the United Kuki Liberation Front (UKLF), which was formed in response to the demand for Kukiland, have attacked Sugnu, Tangjeng and are involved in the ongoing armed conflict in Serou area since Sunday.
During the incident, other commando teams arrived at Tangjeng in bulletproof rickshaws but the ignition of the vehicle failed while attacking them.
The commandos in the vehicle were safely evacuated. However, police said suspected Kuki militants pushed the vehicles down a cliff.
