Dibrugarh: Four members of fundamentalist preacher Amrit Pal Singh’s outfit were brought to Assam from Punjab on Sunday, police said.
They were among 78 people arrested on Saturday in a major crackdown on the Punjab government’s ‘Waris Punjab De’ (WPD), headed by Amritpal, who is wanted in several criminal cases.
Four persons arrested in Punjab have been brought here. He has been lodged in Dibrugarh Central Jail,” said Punjab Police officer Tejbir Singh Hundal.
The four accused who were brought here include Daljit Singh Kalsi, Bhagwant Singh, Gurmeet Singh and Pradhanmantri Bajeka.
A 27-member team from AAP-ruled Punjab, including an Inspector General rank officer, went to Dibrugarh with the four accused, an Assam Police officer said.
However, none of the officers, including Dibrugarh SP Shwetank Mishra, was ready to explain why the four accused were brought to BJP-ruled Assam, more than 2,500 km away.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is currently in New Delhi, told reporters that his state would provide necessary security to the accused in jail.
“Sometimes, people who are arrested in one state are sent to jail in another state. According to my information, Punjab Police has sent four people. We will provide them all security in the jail,” he said. ‘ They said.
Dubai returnee Amrit Pal, who is on the run, was appointed WPD chief last year. The organization was founded by actor and activist Deep Sidhu, who died in a road accident.
According to the Punjab Police, the WPD members have been named in criminal cases related to communal disturbance, attempt to murder, assault on police personnel, and obstructing public servants in the lawful discharge of their duties.
Last month, Amrit Pal and his supporters, some armed with swords and guns, broke through barricades and entered the Ajnala police station on the outskirts of Amritsar city, demanding the release of a WPD member.
