Imphal: Former Puducherry MP P Kannan resigned from the BJP on Saturday to protest against human rights violations and crimes against women in violence-hit Manipur. Kannan left the Congress and joined the BJP in 2021.
In a statement on Saturday, Kannan condemned the incidents of violence and atrocities against women in Manipur.
“I have no words to condemn the atrocities against women. I hereby formally declare that I have no affiliation or connection with the BJP. My fight for the common people will always continue,” Kannan was quoted as saying by TOI.
He demanded President’s rule in Manipur where human rights violations and crimes against women are on the rise.
He lamented that two tribal women were stripped and stripped by a violent mob after the video of the incident was widely shared on social media platforms two and a half months later.
He termed this practice as barbaric and against all civilization and culture of any race or community in any part of the world.
The former Member of Parliament said that the events taking place in Manipur are shameful not only for Indians but for the entire humanity and especially women.
“No one in the state government or the central government can hold their heads high. Instead, they should accept the huge wrong against women in our country and immediately bring the Manipur government under President’s rule.”
