Silchar: The police have recently launched an investigation into the destruction of agar plants by a group of miscreants in the forest land of Gopalpur-Pangchera area of ​​Assam’s Karimganj district.

The forest land at Gopalpur-Pingcherra falls under Dengarbond GP under Dohalia Forest Range of Patharkandi Assembly Constituency, about 105 km from Silchar.
According to reports, an FIR was lodged by a forest official at Bazaricherra police station on Monday in connection with the incident.

The complainant told the police that the matter came to light on Monday morning after which the forest department officials investigated and found that a large number of agar plants/plants spread over an area of ​​about 1.5 hectares were destroyed.
The official said that apart from this, a forest nursery and signboards installed at different places have been severely damaged.

He suspected that these heinous activities were carried out on Sunday night or Saturday night.
Locals suspect that timber smugglers, taking advantage of the absence of forest officials in the area, destroyed the plantation.

They claimed that the workers of Olam Chera Forest Protection Unit (local forest unit) were on leave for Durga Puja and miscreants took advantage of it.

He also claimed that during Durga Puja, a huge amount of timber was smuggled from the area.

Notably, the Karimganj district forest department had launched an eviction drive last year in the Gopalpur-Pangchara area (where forest resources had been destroyed) and illegally cleared 50 hectares for plantation.

55 lakh from the government and a Joint Forest Management Committee (JFMC) was formed for the project, which began in May with works such as fencing and planting.

IT was About 25 hectares of land was used for planting agar and the remaining land was to be used in the next farming season in April/May.

Based on the complaint, the police visited the Gopalpur-Pangchra area and started investigation, sources said. However, according to the latest reports, no one has been arrested.
