For unfurling tricolour upside down, FIR against Assam BJP chief
Nagaon: An FIR has been registered against Assam BJP president Bhabesh Kalita for hoisting the tricolor upside down on Independence Day.
The FIR against the Assam BJP chief was registered at Nagaon Sadar police station on Tuesday (August 15).
A complaint filed by three residents of Assam’s Nagaon district has accused the state BJP president of indulging in ‘treasonous’ activity.
In the FIR, Assam BJP president Bhabesh Kalita is accused of going ahead with flying the tricolor upside down despite being aware of the mistake.
He alleged that the Assam BJP president’s action was part of a “deliberate conspiracy”.
It may be noted that Assam BJP president Bhabesh Kalita had created a controversy on Tuesday (August 15) after hoisting the national flag upside down at the party’s state headquarters in Guwahati on the occasion of Independence Day.
Kalita hoisted the flag with a green stripe at the top instead of a saffron stripe.
This mistake was not noticed by Kalita or other party leaders present at the event.
However, some party workers pointed this out after Kalita finished her speech.
The flag was then brought down and properly hoisted again by Kalita.
However, the incident has sparked a controversy, with many criticizing Kalita for her recklessness.
Flying the national flag upside down is a serious crime. Kalita should be held accountable for her actions,” said a social media user.
Meanwhile, the Assam BJP chief apologized for the mistake, saying he did not realize the flag was upside down.
The Flag Code of India, 2022 prohibits flying the national flag upside down.
The code also states that whoever violates the code can be punished with imprisonment up to three years or fine or both.
