Mounted Police in Imphal
Imphal: In a first in the Northeast, the Manipur government has decided to introduce police in Imphal to maintain the tradition of the erstwhile imperial state.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh said that in order to maintain the tradition of the erstwhile imperial state; Police will be introduced for the first time in Imphal city.
Singh said that when the state was under the imperial rule, the Manipuri Cavalry played an important role in various wars.
“The present generation needs to know, follow and preserve the contribution made by the forefathers of Manipur to protect Manipur from external forces,” he said.
The Chief Minister said that in the first phase, 20 Mounted Police will be introduced in Imphal city to patrol the city including market areas.
A committee headed by Inspector General of Police (Zone-1) Thimthing Ngsawa has been formed to select policemen from the state police force who are passionate about horse riding.
The Chief Minister said that the government is also planning to introduce more mounted police in other police stations to develop Manipuri ponies.
In 1840, the mounted police with two swars (riders) started their journey in Calcutta (formerly Calcutta) and converted into a full unit two years later.
Currently, the Kolkata Police has around 70 horses under its command.
