For peace in Manipur special prayers held in Mizoram churches
Aizawl: Various churches of different denominations in Mizoram responded to a call by two church bodies to pray for the restoration of peace in violence-torn Manipur.
While members of some churches offered prayers on Saturday night, other churches including Mizoram Presbyterian offered special prayers on Sunday (July 09).
The call to prayer was given by the Mizoram Kohhran Heritage Committee (MKHC), a group of senior church leaders and the North East India Council of Churches (NEICC).
Earlier, MKHC and Mizoram Presbyterian Church had expressed deep concern over the communal clashes that started in Manipur on May 3, and expressed their solidarity with the victims.
They also strongly condemned the burning of churches and vandalism of other religious structures by miscreants.
Meanwhile, Mizoram is facing a resource crunch as it is yet to receive financial assistance from the Center to provide relief to over 12,300 internally displaced people from the neighboring state, an official statement said.
The state finance department will give Rs. 5 crore to the Executive Committee of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to provide relief to IDPs, it said.
The statement also said that the government has decided to collect funds from ministers, legislators, corporators, central, state, PSUs and employees of commercial bank sectors, it added.
According to the state home department, a total of 12,344 people from Manipur are currently taking shelter in 11 districts of Mizoram.
North Mizoram’s Kolasib district hosts the highest number of IDPs at 4,383, followed by Manipur’s border district of Aizawl with 4,167 and Sitchewal district with 2,940, the department said.
