Aizawl: Mizoram Home Minister Lalchamliana on Monday said the state government has not received any assistance from the Center to provide relief to over 12,300 internally displaced people (IDPs) from violence-hit Manipur.
The Mizoram government has sought Rs 10 crore from the Center to provide assistance to the people of the neighboring state, who took refuge in Mizoram due to communal violence in their state.
“It is very unfortunate that till date the Center is unable to release Rs 10 crore as humanitarian aid to IDPs from Manipur,” Lalchamliana told PTI.
He said that Chief Minister Zoramthanga had written to both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah requesting Rs 10 crore assistance for the homeless in May.
He said that the state delegation led by Tourism MinisterRobert Romawia Royte and other officials including Home Commissioner and Secretary H Lalenmawia had also met Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla last month.
The Home Minister said, “Though the Union Home Secretary assured us of help during a meeting with Roite and other officials in Delhi, no help has reached us till date and neither has it since. No word has come from,” said the interior minister.
He said that the Mizoram government wants humanitarian aid for Indian citizens and not for foreigners.
Lalchamliana, who also heads a high-level panel on IDPs, said the state government has mobilized ministers, legislators, central and state government employees, state PSUs, commercial banks as state financial resources to provide relief. Banks and corporators have started collecting public donations. And recovery measures are not enough.
He also urged Delhi to provide immediate relief to the displaced people from Manipur.
According to the state home department, a total of 12,344 people from Manipur are currently taking refuge in the state.
It said Kolasib district in North Mizoram hosts the highest number of IDPs at 4,383, followed by Aizawl district with 4,167 and Saitual district with 2,940.
Of the 12,344 people, 2,884 live in relief camps, while the remaining 9,460 live outside relief camps (in relative’s houses or rented houses), officials said.
