Guwahati: The Assam Government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, faces accusations of violating the model code of conduct (MCC) for the Lok Sabha polls by promoting government achievements on social media platforms.
According to the MCC issued by the Election Commission of India (ECI), once the code is in effect, the party in power—whether at the Centre or in the states—must refrain from leveraging its official position for campaign purposes. This includes refraining from announcing policies, projects, or schemes that could sway voter behavior.
Additionally, utilizing public funds for advertising or using official mass media channels to bolster electoral prospects is prohibited.
However, the official Twitter handle of the Assam Chief Minister (@CMOfficeAssam) shared a news link from Organiser, highlighting the surge in foreign tourist numbers at Kaziranga National Park following Prime Minister Modi’s recent visit.
An archive of the post can be viewed here.
It’s worth noting that the expenses for maintaining the official handle of the Assam Chief Minister are covered by the Information and Public Relations department of the Assam government.
The post read, “Assam: Kaziranga National Park witnesses record numbers of foreign tourists following Hon’ble PM Modi’s overnight stay,” drawing criticism for potentially breaching MCC guidelines by promoting governmental achievements during the code’s enforcement.
Another post shared on the official handle of the Assam Chief Minister promoting government achievements on social media platforms says, “100% achievement in institutional deliveries, JJM water connections in AWCs and SSAs (internal electrification of all schools in Dibrugarh.”
The post reads, “Under the steadfast leadership of HCM Dr @himantabiswa, Dibrugarh district is making strides in various areas, moving closer to the ultimate goal of #ViksitAssam.”
Although the Lok Sabha election in Assam has concluded, the MCC remains in effect until the announcement of results.
In contrast, the official handle of the Prime Minister (@PMOIndia) has been notably inactive since March 29, with no posts shared thereafter. The last post made by the PMO on its handle was at 1:41 pm on March 29.
Notably, the official handle of the Assam Chief Minister persistently shares posts on various topics despite the enforcement of the MCC.
