For killing Naga leader Abonmai, NIA declares eight people wanted

Imphal: The National Investigation Agency (NIA), Manipur’s Imphal branch has declared eight persons wanted in connection with the abduction and murder of North-Eastern Naga leader Athuan Abonmai, who had a cash reward of Rs 2 lakh.

The bullet-riddled body of Athuan Abonmai was found in Pallong village under Tami police station in Tamei sub-division of Tamenglong district of Manipur, which borders Nagaland and Assam in the northwest.
A special NIA court issued declaratory orders with photographs of wanted criminals carrying a cash reward of Rs 2 lakh.
Photographs of wanted persons have been displayed on the wall of Cheirap Court in Imphal on Monday.

According to the orders issued by the NIA, Khamkhuanang, Athuna Pamei, Withonbou, Chunkimlung Thaimei, Keiduampou Panmei, Pousabou alias Jackson, NK Widingambou and Achuna Panmei, all hail from Tamenglong district.
They are punishable under Sections 302/307/365/400 and 34 IPC and Sections 16/17/20 of the UA (P) Act.

The NIA has taken up this matter following the order of the Union Home Ministry.
The Manipur government has handed over the case to the Central Investigation Agency through an order which reads, “Since the above action is suspected to have been carried out by NSCN (IM) cadres and the sensitive nature of the case. And in view of the possible interstate situation. In conclusion, it is felt that this case is suitable for investigation by NIA.
It is noteworthy that Adviser and former President of Zeliangrong Baudi (Assam, Manipur, and Nagaland) Athuan Abonmai on the morning of 22nd September 2021 from his residence in Tarung village in the State Community Outreach Program at Polo Ground, Tamenglong. He was abducted by about 20 NSCN (IM) cadres from Tamenglong headquarters on the same day, while he was participating in “Go to Hills 2.0”.
Soon after her abduction, a case was registered by her son Aran Abonamai at Lamphel Police Station, Imphal West.

After that, the case was transferred to Tamenglong police station and a fresh case was registered.
