For Jowai By-Pass construction issues, Meghalaya HC slams PWD

Guwahati: The Meghalaya High Court has severely criticized the state Public Works Department (PWD) for the haphazard construction of the Jowai By-Pass, particularly the dumping of soil and debris into the Myntdu River.

Acting Chief Justice Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew and Justice B Bhattacharjee expressed deep concern over the manner in which the project is being executed, citing photographs and reports that highlight the environmental damage caused.

The court noted that the project, costing nearly Rs 94 crores, has been plagued by neglect from the contractor and PWD officials.

The court emphasized the need for accountability and directed the PWD to provide detailed information on land acquisition, environmental impact assessments, and measures taken to prevent further damage to the river and surrounding areas.

The next hearing on the matter is scheduled for September 24.
