GUWAHATI: The Assam Police is offering voluntary retirement to around 300 officers who are considered to be “drinkers”, according to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
He said that heavy consumption of alcohol had damaged his body, and the government had arranged a Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) for police personnels.
The VRS offer process has already started and fresh recruitment will be done to fill the vacancies.
Baswa Sarma, who is also the state’s home minister, said he was working on decentralization of governance.
As part of this effort, the process of opening offices with powers in all 126 Legislative Assembly Constituency areas has already started.
“We are trying to ensure that people do not have to travel to the district headquarters to work in the DC office, and that the DC office is available in every area of LAC will look after law and order, and will be given various responsibilities,” explained Biswa Sarma.
