Manipur: Following reports of fresh incidents of violence in Manipur’s Imphal, former BJP MLA Telvum Thangzalam Haokip and two others were arrested by security forces on Tuesday.
A joint team of security forces nabbed Haokip along with two armed men, identified as Bicky Singson and John Gangte, from New Checkon area under Imphal West district, an area inhabited by Kuki, Meitei and other ethnic groups. is a mixture of Two licensed guns were also seized from Haokip’s possession.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh said the former MLA was behind the plot to incite fresh unrest in the conflict-torn state, where at least 71 people were killed and 35,000 displaced a fortnight ago.
Notably, a fresh round of violence was reported in New Checkon Bazaar on Monday where a mob set fire to the abandoned houses of members of the Kuki community, after which a few miscreants threatened shopkeepers and forced them to close their shops. Turn it off.
Following the fresh tension, the Indian Army released a statement that read, “In response to four armed suspects threatening shopkeepers in New Checkon area and then moving to New Lambulane area of Imphal East district, three Army/ Columns of Assam Rifles were launched. Immediately a joint team of Army, Assam Rifles, Police and Rapid Action Force (RAF) cordoned off the area. was located and resulted in the recovery of two single-barrel 12-bore guns along with three suspects. They have been apprehended and handed over to the police.”
Haokip was the BJP MLA from Henglep Constituency in 2017. Later in 2020, he resigned from the party and joined the Congress.
However, before the assembly elections in 2022, he joined the Shiv Sena.
