For displaced people from Manipur, Mizoram raise funds for relief

Aizawl: After a delay in relief by the Centre, the Mizoram government has started collecting funds to provide relief to over 12,200 people in riot-hit Manipur, a senior official in the state’s home department said on Thursday. .

The state government on Tuesday issued a notice seeking donations from ministers, legislators, central and state government employees, corporators of Aizawl Municipal Council and bankers, the official said.
He said that security forces like Assam Rifles, Indian Army and Border Security Force (BSF) would also be requested to donate for relief.

The official said that like-minded donors are requested to contribute any amount as per their convenience in the bank account number of State Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Directorate.
He said the Center has not provided any assistance even a month after seeking a relief package for the internally displaced people, who are taking refuge in the state after the communal violence in Manipur on May 3.

In May, Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga asked the Center to provide Rs. 10 crore relief package for the homeless.
The official said the government has received “no word” from the Center since a state delegation led by Sports Minister Robert Romawia Royte met Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla on the issue last month.

He also said that the Mizoram government has not received any word from its Manipur counterpart about its residents taking refuge in Manipur.
He alleged that Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, during his telephonic conversation with Zoramthanga recently, had expressed concern only for the protection of the Meitei community in Mizoram and not for the displaced people.
At least 12,280 people from Manipur have taken refuge in Mizoram, according to the state home department.

The northeastern state also hosts more than 35,000 refugees from insurgents from Myanmar and Bangladesh.
