Guwahati: Ahead of the delimitation exercise in Assam, the full bench of the Election Commission of India will meet and interact with various stakeholders including political parties and civil society.
According to an official release on Saturday, a full bench of the Election Commission comprising Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar and two Election Commissioners Anup Chandra Pandey and Arun Goel will visit Assam from March 26 to 28 and talk to various people.
“The commission has decided to visit Assam to know the ground reality and expectations of stakeholders and general public on the ongoing delimitation exercise in the state,” it added.
The Election Commission of India has been entrusted with the task of delimiting Assam’s assembly and parliamentary constituencies.
“During this period, the commission will interact with political parties, public representatives, civil societies, social organizations and state administration officials including district election officers and deputy commissioners,” the release said.
It added that in order to obtain information regarding the ongoing delimitation process, the Commission expects all stakeholders to cooperate in this effort and provide valuable suggestions so that the work can be completed in time.
A senior official in the Chief Electoral Officer’s office said that the preliminary work to start the delimitation exercise has started and the final work will begin after the CEC visit in the last week of this month.
On 31 December 2022, the Assam Cabinet decided to merge the four districts with their parent from which they were separated into separate districts. Biswanath was merged with Sonitpur, Hojai with Nagaon, Tamulpur with Baksa and Bajali with Barpeta.
The decision to merge the districts came a day before the Election Commission banned the creation of new administrative units in Assam from January 1, 2023 as the polling panel will conduct a delimitation exercise in the state.
In the state cabinet meeting held in New Delhi, the administrative boundaries of some villages and some towns were also changed.
In March this year, the Guwahati High Court issued two notices to the Assam government asking why it had dissolved Hojai and Baswanath districts within four weeks.
