For Cherry Blossom festival, MUCF urges govt to revise end date

Shillong: The Meghalaya United Christian Forum (MUCF) has asked the state government to reconsider its decision to end the upcoming Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival on Sunday to respect the sentiments of the Christian community.
In an official statement, MUCF chairman Rev Batkupar Dunai expressed the forum’s belief that while every day is a divine gift, Sunday is a special holy day for communal worship among different denominations of the Christian faith.
Therefore, the Forum strongly appeals to the State Government of Meghalaya to consider holding the closing events of the Cherry Blossom Festival on another day.
The move will be to respect the sentiments of the Christian population in Meghalaya who observe Sunday as a holy and divinely ordained day for uninterrupted prayer, worship and fellowship within the church, without extravagant events.
The Cherry Blossom Festival is scheduled to begin on November 17 and end on Sunday, November 19.
In a related development, the Khasi Jaintia Christian Leaders Forum (KJCLF) clarified that they are not opposed to festivals organized by the state government, but they insist that Sunday is a holy day for Christians and churches and it is a holy day.
The Secretary of the Forum, Rev. Dr. EH Kharkongor, expressed his desire to celebrate the festivals in a peaceful manner and with the active involvement of the community, free from obstacles and distractions, to promote an atmosphere of peace and harmony within the state.
