In Laitumkhrah assault case Meghalaya police arrested five people

Agartala: Krishna Kamal Das (48), panchayat head of BJP-ruled Dwarikapur village in Tripura’s Khowai district, was arrested by the police on Sunday night for allegedly killing CPI-M leader Dilip Shukla Das (50).

Although the Tripura police claimed it was related to personal enmity and nothing to do with politics, the opposition CPI-M and Congress accused BJP leaders of indulging in the post-poll violence that resulted that Dilip was killed.
Tripura police said Dilip stormed Krishna’s house and accused him of depriving the CPI-M leader of PMAY House and other government benefits on political grounds.

The altercation started around 11:30 pm on Saturday night, when the accused and the victim discussed the BJP’s return to power in the recently concluded assembly elections and accused each other of the ongoing post-poll violence.
Suddenly, Krishna and his driver Tapas Das allegedly attacked Dilip with sticks and assaulted him severely, injuring him severely.
Dilip was rushed to the Khowai District Hospital and later referred to the Government Medical College in Agartala in a critical condition where he died on Sunday.

Tripura police initially detained and later arrested Krishna Kamal and he confessed to the crime.
However, its driver is reported to have escaped.

The incident led to tension in the district after senior leaders of both parties issued stern warnings to each other.

A large number of paramilitary forces have been deployed in sensitive areas of the district and the administration called a peace meeting with the parties to end the tension.
