Imphal: An FIR has been registered against the 9 Assam Rifles personnel by the Phougakchao Ikhai police station for allegedly intercepting a team of state police and commandos while chasing armed miscreants and killed the father-son duo on Saturday. including killed three.
The incident took place around 6.30 am on Saturday morning near Kutub Wali Masjid which is located along Pholjang Road in Kwakta Ward No. 8, about 2.8 km northwest.
The complaint report submitted by a sub-inspector of Phougakchao Ikhai police station stated that at around 6.40 am on Saturday morning, he was informed that at around 6.30 am the same day, a team of state police including District Commando, Bishnupur Superintendent of Led by the police, Bishnupur proceeded towards Pholjang Road along Kwakta Ward No.8.
Teams as a follow-up action in connection with search proceedings in FIR No. 927(8)2023 PGCI-PS u/s 302/400/427/436/460 IPC and 25(1-C) Arms Act. Acted on the spot. Tracing suspected Kuki militants who may be sheltering in Kwakta Ward No. 8 which is located in the adjoining area between Kwakta and Pholjang villages.
The report said that on reaching Kutub Wali Masjid in Kwakta Ward No. 8 along Pholjang Road, the state police team, including the District Commando, Bishnupur, was stopped by 9 Assam Rifles personnel who parked their ‘Casper vehicle’ and Stopped. Kwakta Pholjang in the middle of the road and obstructed the execution of his law-abiding duty, allowing the accused Kuki militants to escape freely to a safe area for them.
Pursuant to the complaint, FIR No. 982(8)2023 PGCI-PS u/s-166/189/341/353/506 and a suo moto case for investigation u/s 34 IPC has been registered at Phougakchao Police Station.
It may be mentioned here that on the same day i.e. August 5, 2023, three Meitei villagers, including a father and son duo, were brutally murdered in their homes by suspected Kuki militants late at night in Kwakta Lamkhai Ward No. VIII.
After the incident, there was a fierce exchange of fire between the Kuki militants and volunteers of Meitei village along with the state forces in the area.
In the public eye for allegedly being partial to the Kuki community, rally protests were held in the state’s Valley districts on Monday demanding the government withdraw the Assam Rifles from the state.
Perhaps, after the rally and calls from the state to withdraw them, the 9 Assam Rifles were withdrawn along the Bishnupur-Kangwai road on Monday and replaced by the 128 battalion of the CRPC when The Center had allotted 10 additional companies of Central Security Forces. Law and order duty in Manipur after communal tension escalates in the riot-torn state.
An official order issued and signed by the Additional General of Police (Law and Order) of Manipur L Kailuin said that in a partial amendment to the office order dated August 3, Moirang Lamkhai of Bishnupur. I Naka/Check Point will be placed on Bishnupur to Kangwai Road. 9th Assam Rifles to be manned by Civil Police and CRPF with immediate effect and till further orders.
