
For assistance of refugees from Manipur,Mizoram seeks 5 Crore
Aizawl: The Mizoram government has sought relief assistance of Rs 5 crore from the Center following the massive influx of people from violence-hit Manipur, a senior state home department official said.
State Home Commissioner and Secretary H Lalengmawia said that the state home department has urged the Center to provide immediate financial assistance to the internally displaced people of neighboring Manipur, who have suffered from ongoing ethnic violence. Has taken refuge in Mizoram due to crisis.
“A letter seeking financial assistance of Rs 5 crore as immediate relief for internally displaced people was sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) last week. We hope the Center will provide assistance as The displaced people are none other than Indian citizens,โ said the Home Secretary.
According to Lalengmawia, people from the neighboring state continue to flee to Mizoram and the number of internally displaced people taking refuge in the northeastern state has reached 8,532 as of Tuesday.
He said that the majority of the displaced people have been kept in temporary shelters in several villages, while others have been sheltered by their relatives.
He said that government, NGOs, church and village authorities are providing food and other basic necessities to the homeless people.
The senior official said that so far the government has not faced any problem in terms of food, temporary shelter and other relief items as adequate arrangements were made in advance in view of possible influx from the neighboring state.
However, the government may face several problems in the long run as Mizoram also hosts over 35,000 people from Myanmar and Bangladesh.
About 34,000 Myanmar nationals and 1,000 Bangladeshi refugees are currently taking refuge in different parts of Mizoram.
Lalengmawia added that he had not received any word from the Manipur government about its residents taking refuge in Mizoram.
According to the Home Department, 3,022 people from Manipur have fled to Assam’s border district of Kolasib, while another 2,875 and another 2,252 people have taken shelter in Manipur’s border districts of Aizawl and Sethual districts respectively.
The remaining 383 people took shelter in Champhai, Khawzawl, Hnahthial, Serchhip, Mamit and Lunglei districts, the department said.
