Aizawl: The Mizo National Youth Front (MNYF) has demanded that Rahul Gandhi publicly apologize to the people of Mizoram for the devastating bomb blast in 1966 during his grandmother Indira Gandhi’s tenure.
The demand comes as a reminder of the historical events that took place during the Indira Gandhi regime and left its mark on the collective memory of Mizos.
The Mizo National Youth Front, in its statement, cited the heroic struggle of the Zo children for their freedom, where they said they were united under the slogan “For our God and our people”. MNYF officials said that Mizos were seen standing together during this period, while Indira Gandhi served as Prime Minister.
During these tumultuous times, the then home minister, GL Nanda, issued a dreaded order to “crush them”, leaving an indelible mark on the history of Mizoram, they added.
A clear revelation from the MNYF was that no government in the world resorted to bombing its own citizens using warplanes. Yet, tragically, the people of Mizo, including innocent children and mothers, fell victim to such bombings on March 5, 1966.
It was highlighted that during this period, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi allegedly misled certain members of Parliament by claiming that the Indian government had dropped rations instead of bombs.
The memory of the incident continues to haunt the minds of the Mizos and it is hoped that Rahul Gandhi, who seems eager to express his love for the Mizos, will admit that such a tragic event should never happen. should have
“We want to demand that during this visit, he apologizes for the actions taken by the government led by his grandmother, which hurt Mizoram,” an MNYF official said.
