Guwahati: A citizen meeting of the Adivasi Welfare and Development Council (AWDC) was held at Margaret Memorial High School in Bargolai, under the Margherita sub-division of Tinsukia district for the first time on August 25.
This meeting was part of the Adivasi Peace Accord which was signed on April 15, 2022, in New Delhi in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The Accord established the Adivasi Welfare and Development Council to promote the development and welfare of the Adivasi community in Assam.
Peter Dang Deputy Chief Executive member of Adivasi Welfare and Development Council was present as the chief guest at the event. Adivasi Peace Movement Committee President Vincent Kujur, General Secretary Ingnitius Ekka, All Adivasi Student Association of Assam Tinsukia district committee former president Ramanus Lakra, Advisor Milton Kujur, Adivasi Peace movement committee Tinsukia district committee president Asap Tirkey, All Adivasi Women Association of Assam Tinsukia district committee president Reshma Uraon, All Adivasi Student Association of Assam (AASAA) Margherita regional committee president President Samuel Topno, Secretary Sanjay, Margaret Memorial High School Bargolai founder and Proprietor Anil Nag were also present, among resource persons of Adivasi community and people living in Margherita sub-division.
The guests were felicitated with traditional Adivasi Gamosha.
In his speech, Peter Dang said that significant development has taken place for more than 8 million Adivasi community members living in Assam under CM Himanta’s leadership. He also stated that the Adivasi Welfare and Development Council is committed to continuing comprehensive development work in the future.
Furthermore, Dang informed that the Adivasi Peace Accord was signed on April 15, 2022, in New Delhi between the Adivasi insurgent groups of Assam, including the All Adivasi National Liberation Army, Birsa Commando Force, Adivasi People’s Army, and Santhal Tiger Force, among a total of 17 insurgent groups.
The Accord included a commitment from Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Assam CM Himanta to ensure that the Adivasi community living in Assam would benefit from the agreement.
