Five Medals for Assam
GANDHINAGAR: Jamuna Boro and Ankushita Boro on Monday joined Tokyo bronze medalists Lulina Borgohen, Shiva Thapa and Pilau Basumatri to ensure five medals for Assam in the boxing events at the 36th National Games here.
Former World Championship medalist Jamuna Boru battled a high fever, teary eyes and body aches before putting on a clinical performance to make it to the semi-finals of the women’s 57kg featherweight category. She later joined her Assam teammate and good friend Ankushita Boru to confirm the fifth boxing medal for the state.
Apart from others from the Northeast, Manipur’s Alina Thonavajam and Mizoram’s Malsumthalunga also made it to the last four, which will be played at the Mahatma Mandir here on Tuesday.
While Yamuna overcame illness to outclass Rajasthan’s lesser-known Sapna Sharma in the day’s opening bout, Ankushita was the more dominant boxer in the 66kg welterweight category against home favorite Pramjit Kaur.
Jamuna will next face Haryana’s Poonam, who defeated Manipur’s Samimband Khalkhapham 4-1 in another 57kg quarter-final. In the semi-finals, Ankushita will face Rajasthan’s Lalita, against whom she holds a commanding 3-0 head-to-head lead.
