Imphal: Armed militants opened gunshots at a poll meeting of the Indian National Congress candidate of the Lok Sabha Inner Manipur seat at Kumbi Khuga Wangma in Manipur’s Bishnupur district on Tuesday afternoon, officials said.
About four to five militants who came in a Maruti 800 car fired two rounds of bullets towards the meeting venue while Congress leader and former Manipur chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh was delivering his speech at an election campaign.
The miscreants managed to escape after the incident via the Kumbi bridge, a distance of around 300 meters at around 3:35 pm on Tuesday.
Congress is setting up Dr. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam as a candidate in the Inner Manipur LS seat which will go to the polls on April 19.
He is fighting in the multi-cornered contests in this Inner Manipur seat.
No one was reported to be injured during the incident.
The meeting, however, successfully culminated without any untoward incident.
Two empty cartridges were recovered from the firing spot and police registered a case in this matter.
This is the second time in less than five days that the armed miscreants attacked the meeting venue of this INC candidate.
On April 12, 2024, a poll meeting of Dr Angomcha Bimol Akoijam at Moirang was disrupted after three gunmen opened fire at the venue.
It may be mentioned that Congress candidate in Outer Seat Alfred K Arthur was also attacked twice some weeks back by armed miscreants at Ukhrul in Manipur.
