FIR filed against coal mafia in Ledu by deceased family
Assam: In a major development, the family of coal worker Nayan Phukan has lodged a First Information Report (FIR) with the Ledu Police against notorious coal mafia kingpin Khitish Devnath. The incident, which occurred on June 7, has sparked outrage and intensified calls for action against illegal coal mining activities in Ledu, Jagun and Margherita.
Expressing deep condolence, Satra Mukti Sangram Samiti Working President Papu Dutta strongly condemned the unfortunate incident and highlighted the urgent need for justice. “The line of duty death of Nayan Phukan is a tragic incident. Today, we stand with his bereaved family to offer our support and solidarity,” Dutta said.
The Satra Mukti Sangram Samiti, along with several other organisations, has been continuously urging Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh to crack down on the coal mafia syndicate operating in the region. What steps to take?
Alarmed by the repeated incidents resulting in loss of life, Dutta expressed deep concern over the government’s lack of effective action.
โAfter every such incident, where laborers lose their lives, it is disheartening to see parents taking to the streets to seek justice.
We demand that the district administration immediately respond to such incidents and eliminate the coal syndicate that has wreaked havoc,” Dutta added.
Ledu, known as the “Coal Queen of Assam”, has been plagued by several deaths related to illegal coal mining. The untimely death of Nayan Phukan while on her way to Dwipmine Lal land, known for its illegal coal mining activities, has once again highlighted the gravity of the situation.
Adding to the growing fears, the accused Khitish Devnath, who is considered to be at the heart of the coal mafia, is still absconding 36 hours after the incident.
