Churachandpur: The Zomi Students Federation has filed a First Information Report (FIR) against popular singer Tapta for his controversial song which has created a huge controversy.
The song’s lyrics allegedly call for the genocide of the Kukis, which amounts to hate speech and incitement to violence.
In the FIR addressed to the officer-in-charge of Churachandpur police station, Tapta has been accused of promoting enmity between different groups on the basis of religion, caste, place of birth, residence, language and more.
It further claims that his actions are biased to maintain harmony, and that his statements are defamatory and show enmity, hatred or malice against members of Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes (SC/ST) promotes emotions.
The conflict has arisen against the backdrop of ethnic violence that has gripped the state since May 3. Tapta, also known as Jayenta Loukrakpam, a popular Meitei singer based in Imphal, released the controversial song on July 7.
A striking line from the song says, “The Meiteis won’t rest until every Kuki is killed.”
Tapta rose to prominence in Manipur’s music scene with her powerful debut album ‘Power of Attraction’.
Over the years, he has gained a considerable following across all communities in Manipur, earning him a dedicated fan base.
