Guwahati The Coordination Committee Against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Assam has urged the Registrar General of India to publish the final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
The committee stated that the final draft was submitted to the RGI in 2019, but it has not been published to date.
Its publication has been delayed due to legal challenges and objections. The organisation said that the publication of the NRC is crucial to addressing the issue of illegal immigration in Assam.
The committee further expressed gratitude to the Supreme Court for upholding Clause 6A of the Citizenship Act, 1955, which sets the cut-off date for granting Indian citizenship at March 25, 1971.
However, the committee claimed that it was concerned about the implementation of the NRC and the deportation of illegal immigrants.
