Imphal: Government and security forces have claimed that the situation in Manipur has been brought under control through coordinated actions of all stakeholders.
The IAF operated continuous flights from two airfields in Assam with C17 Globemaster and AN 32 aircraft.
Induction started on Thursday night and additional columns dominated from Friday evening hours.
The evacuation and evacuation of citizens of all communities from the affected areas continued throughout the night.
Defense sources said that the flag march is going on in Churachandpur and other sensitive areas.
Several columns of the Army and the Assam Rifles were deployed overnight to quell the massive riots that broke out between tribals and the majority Meitei community across Manipur, displacing more than 9,000 people.
Meanwhile, the central government is closely monitoring the worsening situation in Manipur.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday held two meetings with top officials of the Manipur and Central governments through video conference to review the situation.
Paramilitary forces are being mobilized from neighboring states to restore law and order.
All trains to Manipur have been stopped in view of the escalating situation in the state.
The Indian Army on Thursday raised the alarm over the broadcast of fake videos about the security situation in the state.
“Fake videos on the security situation in Manipur, including the video of the attack on the Assam Rifles post, are being circulated by hostile elements for their vested interests.
SpearCorps.IndianArmy tweeted, “Indian Army requests all to rely on material from official and verified sources only.”
Clashes between tribals and the majority Meitei community in the state escalated overnight on Wednesday, after Naga and Kuki tribesmen staged a ‘tribal solidarity march’ to protest movements by the rival communities in response to earlier attacks. Counterattacks were made by Giving Schedule Tribe (ST) status to Meitei community.
The escalating violence has displaced more than 9,000 people from their villages. Defense PRO Lt Col M Rawat said the Indian Army and the Assam Rifles evacuated more than 7,500 civilians to safety in violence-hit Manipur.
In view of the escalating situation, the Manipur government has made some changes in the top police officers.
Ashutosh Sinha, IPS, ADGP (Intelligence), Manipur has been appointed as the overall operational commander to control and restore normalcy in the state.
He will report to retired IPS officer Kuldiep Singh, who has been appointed as security advisor by the Manipur government.
The Manipur government on Thursday empowered all district magistrates to issue ‘shoot on sight’ orders in extreme cases.
On the other hand, internet services are suspended in the state after the government on Thursday banned broadband and data services of service providers like Reliance JioFiber, Airtel Xtreme, BSNL etc. for five days.
The army said that the situation in Mora and Kangpokpi is under control and all efforts are underway to bring the situation back to normal in Imphal and Chandrachudpur.
Kuldiep Singh, a retired IPS officer and ex-CRPF, has been appointed as security advisor by the Manipur government.
The Center has also dispatched Rapid Action Force (RAF) teams to deploy in violence-hit areas of the northeastern state.
Lt Col Mahendra Rawat, Defense PRO Guwahati, said around 4,000 people have been sheltered in army and Assam Rifles Company operating bases and state government premises at various locations.
The Indian Express reported that more than 7,500 civilians have also been evacuated through rescue operations.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh ensured that the state government was taking all necessary steps to maintain the law and order situation.
He said that the central and state forces have been directed to take strict action against the individuals and groups involved in violence.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also pledged his full support to the Manipur government in the hour of crisis.
Many families affected by the recent events in Manipur have taken refuge in Assam.
“I have requested the Cachar district administration to take care of these families.
“I am also in constant touch with Chief Minister N Biren Singh and have promised full support to the Assam government in this hour of crisis,” Sarma tweeted.
