Imphal: Agitated women vigilante groups (Meira Paibis) took to the streets and burnt effigies of Manipur Governor, Chief Minister, Speaker and BJP leaders at Singjamei Bazaar in Imphal on Tuesday night.
At around 9:00 PM on Tuesday night, Meira Paibis in large numbers burnt the addresses of Manipur Governor, Chief Minister, Manipur Speaker, BJP North East Incharge, and BJP Manipur Pradesh President.
They are demanding the government to reconvene another session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly and calling Tuesday’s session a mockery of the people of Manipur.
She also condemned the ruling BJP-led government headed by Chief Minister N Biren Singh for ending the state assembly session in just 30 minutes on Tuesday.
While burning effigies, they also raised slogans, “against the Manipur government for ending the assembly session in 30 minutes” and demanded the resignation of ministers and BJP leaders from their respective posts for failing to protect people’s lives. Manitombi Devi, a leader of the group on the sidelines of the protest, said that the very short duration of the assembly session is a challenge for Indian democracy, especially for the displaced people who have not been able to return to their homes and who are living in Manipur. In the communal massacre, more than 60,000 people were displaced and more than 150 lost their lives.
Violence broke out on May 3 between the Meities and the Kukis.
Another Meira Paibis leader, RK Memton, also warned that a different kind of agitation would be launched if the government did not reconvene another meeting as soon as possible.
