Shillong: The Voice of the People’s Party (VPP), which has four MLAs in the Meghalaya Assembly, has been recognized as a state party, a senior Election Commission of India (ECI) official said on Monday.
He said that this recognition was based on the evaluation of the electoral performance of the VPP in the recently concluded assembly elections.
ECI Under-Secretary Manish Kumar said, “I am directed to inform that based on the review of electoral performance, the Commission vide its letter dated April 10, 2023 has declared Awami Party as a state party in Meghalaya. recognized under the provisions of the Election Marks (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968.
As requested, a specific symbol of the winner (a device used to separate the chaff from the grain) was allotted, he added.
He said that a notification in this regard will be issued soon.
Welcoming the decision, VPP President Ardent Basaiawmoit said, “We are happy with the ECI’s recognition and we will continue to work for the welfare of the people of the state.”
