Amingaon: Seven people have died and 62 others have been infected with hepatitis A in Assam’s Kamrup (rural) district since February, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Thursday.
Sarma visited the Loco Colony here to condole with the family of a patient who died of the disease on Wednesday.
So far 402 samples have been tested for hepatitis A, out of which 62 have been found positive. On Wednesday, nine out of 100 samples came back positive.
The affected people belong to different parts of Amingaon area of the district.
Sarma directed officials to ensure that infection is contained and control measures are strictly followed.
He also directed the district authorities to set up a medical health camp in the area on Friday where doctors from Guwahati Medical College Hospital will treat the patients.
Kamrup Joint Director of Health Services Mohitosh Banerjee said four people have died in the last 14 days due to hepatitis A.
This disease is mainly caused by consumption of contaminated water. Banerjee said such water samples were collected for testing.
He said awareness campaigns have been conducted in the affected areas and health workers are making daily field visits asking people to go to doctors and get tested if they are suffering from high fever.
The affected areas include Loko Colony, Madhyam Khanda, No. 26 Colony, Hatat Colony, Kalibari, Srinath Patti and Maurya Patti. Most of them are under railway land.
Deputy Commissioner Kirti Jali held an emergency meeting with officials of North East Frontier Railways and Public Health and Engineering Department (PHED).
