Drug smuggler injured in police firing while trying to escape in Assam
Kokrajhar (Assam): A man accused of transporting marijuana was injured in a police firing when he allegedly tried to snatch a service weapon from a police officer in Kokrajhar district of Assam and escape from custody, a A senior official said on Thursday.
According to the information provided by the accused, police were conducting a search operation in an area under Bishmuri check post on Wednesday night, who was arrested on the first day.
Kokrajhar Additional Superintendent of Police Surjit Singh Panesar said the man who was taken away with the police team tried to snatch a constable’s weapon and tried to flee.
The officer in charge of the team fired a round into the air and told him to stop.
“When he did not stop, another shot was fired at his leg. He was then taken to Kokrajhar Civil Hospital,” Panesar said.
Earlier, 41 packets of cannabis were recovered from an SUV driven by the accused.
The officer said that the vehicle was heading towards Bihar and the driver also belonged to the same state.
