Dr. Samudra Kashyap has been appointed Vice Chancellor of Nagaland University by the President of India Droupadi Murmu for five years.
The President has appointed Kashyap on the recommendation of the Ministry of Education.
He is a veteran journalist and an alumnus of IIMC 1985-86 batch.
Dr. Samudhar Gupta Kashyap, a distinguished journalist, and prolific writer, stands as a notable figure in the media landscape. With a dedicated career spanning decades, Dr. Kashyap’s influence extends not only to journalism but also to academia, literature and cross-border dialogues.
Born in 1960, Guwahati-based Dr. Samudhar Gupta Kashyap has left an indelible mark on journalism and beyond. Till 9 August 2023, he served as the State Information Commissioner of Assam, a post of distinction. Notably, he holds the distinction of being the first journalist to be appointed as the State Information Commissioner in Assam under the RTI Act. His tenure, which began in August 2020, is set to end in August 2023.
Spanning nearly four decades, Dr. Kashyap’s journey in journalism has been marked by dedication and impact. His longest tenure was with The Indian Express from 1991 to 2018. Prior to this, his passion for writing and reporting found expression in Parantak, a respected Assamese tabloid magazine (1981 to 1986) and Daily Assam, the oldest Assamese newspaper (1987). until 1991).
Academically accomplished, Dr. Kashyap did his Masters in English Literature from Guwahati University. He further honed his skills with a Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism for Developing Countries from the prestigious Indian Institute of Mass Communication, New Delhi.
His academic pursuits culminated in a remarkable achievement – a PhD degree in 2022 from Assam Rajiv Gandhi University of Cooperative Management, Sivasagar, Assam. To explore different areas.
Dr. Kashyap’s literary repertoire as a writer is diverse and influential. He is the author and co-author of more than 20 books in English and Assamese. His works cover a wide range of topics from historical fiction to insightful essays. His English titles include a monograph on the Assam infiltration problem (published by Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini), “Untold Stories of the Freedom Struggle from Northeast India” (Publications Division, Ministry of I&B), and “India -Bangladesh: Fifty Years of Friendship” (Indian Council on International Affairs).
His contributions also extend to the realm of television, where he played an important role in producing “Brahmaputra, Son of Brahma: An Endless Journey” – a 26-episode mega-serial for Doordarshan (2008-09).
An astute analyst and observer, Dr. Samudra Kashyap is a sought-after speaker. His in-depth knowledge on a wide array of topics, especially related to the North East, has led to him being invited by various institutions and organizations across the country. His insights have illuminated discussions on media, Northeast India, national security, insurgency, population, society and youth, to name a few.
For his outstanding services, Dr. Samudra Kashyap has received several honors and awards. Notable among these are the Rai Bahadur MS Oberoi Award (Silver Medal) for exposing corruption in the media (2005), the Bhupen Hazarika National Award (2015) instituted by Sarhad, Pune, and the DY365 Award for Excellence. Apart from his journalistic and literary achievements, Dr. Kashyap has played important roles in academic and advisory positions. His engagements include being a member of the Academic Advisory Board of the Indian Institute of Democratic Leadership (Mumbai), a Government Nominee Member of the Governing Body of the OKD Institute of Social Change and Development (Guwahati), and a member of the State Executive Committee of Campanistry. Services included. Plantation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA), Department of Forests, Environment and Climate Change, Government of Assam.
In the international arena, Dr. Kashyap’s contribution has transcended borders. He has been part of diverse delegations and dialogues, including engagements with organizations such as the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and in the UK and Bhutan.
