Dibrugarh University student jumps to avoid raging
Tinsukia: A student of Assam’s Dibrugarh University has been admitted to a private hospital in a critical condition after he allegedly jumped off a two-storey hostel building “to escape brutal ragging” by senior students. After the incident, three students of the university have been arrested and raids are on to arrest other accomplices.
The victim has been identified as MCom first semester student Anand Sharma, a resident of Amguri in Shivsagar district. Sharma’s family has alleged that the authorities of Dibrugarh University sat on his complaint for months due to which he is now fighting for his life.
The arrested have been identified as Paranjeet Barwah, Niranjan Thakur and Samantha Hazarika.
The incident has sent shockwaves among students and parents across the state and comes at a time when authorities have been given tougher punishments with instructions to crack down on incidents of ragging to curb the scourge within educational institutions.
In her police complaint, Sarita Sharma said, “They robbed her of money, took away her mobile phone, put liquor and weed in her hand and took objectionable pictures to defend their future.”
“She had submitted a written complaint to the Warden of ‘C’ Block of Padmanath Gohin Baroha Chaturniwas (PNGBCN Hostel) on November 17, with the names of 10 students. Instead of dealing sternly, the authorities sat on her complaint. Gone,” one student told on condition of anonymity.
The Dibrugarh Police have registered a case under Sections 120B, 341, 395, 307, 143 of the Indian Penal Code and are investigating the matter.
“We have raided the hostel and arrested three of the five students named in the FIR. We are trying to identify the other accomplices involved,” said Raju Bahadur Chhetri, officer-in-charge of Dibrugarh police station.
Chhetri said the police came to know about the incident from their “sources”, after which a police team reached the spot and met the victim, who was first taken to the Assam Medical College and Hospital and later to a private hospital. He was transferred to the intensive care unit of the hospital.
Later, the victim’s mother filed a police complaint against the five students and their companions.
“There will be no compromise and action will be taken against anyone found involved during the investigation,” he added.
Meanwhile, a group of students of Dibrugarh University sat on protest in front of the administration building to demand responsibility and accountability from the university authorities who were “not able to protect the first semester students.”
“He was complaining to the authorities regarding ragging but they paid no heed,” alleged Sharma.
It is learned that the victim had complained to the Dibrugarh University authorities about ragging by some students.
