Guwahati: Assam has reported a decline in cybercrime cases as 1,781 were reported in the year 2022, DGP (Director General of Police) Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said on Monday.
The DGP told a press conference here that in 2021, 4,846 cases of cybercrime were reported in the state, which decreased to 1,781 last year.
He said that the 24×7 Cyber Fraud Call Center in the state was also able to trace and freeze Rs 6.41 crore of cyber fraud related to 2,177 cases with a success rate of over 18 per cent.
This is possible due to immediate deactivation of SIM and WhatsApp accounts of those involved in cyber fraud, 24×7 monitoring of social media platforms against illegal posts and women and children.
The DGP claimed that crimes against women also declined to 12,034 incidents in 2022 as against 29,046 incidents in 2021 and against an annual average of 27,240 incidents during the period 2017-2021.
“This is due to the establishment of special cells for women with the support of Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), and a coordinated approach by all stakeholders like police, social welfare department, NGOs, labor department, health and education department. Because of the vision. For capacity building and sensitization programs for the police”, he said.
Crimes against children decreased to 4,306 from 5,282 last year.
The number of human trafficking cases also decreased to 96 from 203 last year.
Additionally, the crime rate in the state has now come down to 200 incidents per lakh population as against the previous 366 incidents per lakh population as against 1,33,239 cases reported at the end of 2022. has come to 69,439. By the end of 2021.
He said that a total of 2,878 cases were registered under the NDPS Act in 2022 as against 2,271 last year.
Police arrested 4,691 drug traffickers in 2022, seized 112 kg of heroin, 49,000 kg of ganja, 5.2 lakh pills, more than 2.1 lakh bottles of cough syrup, 215 kg of opium, among others.
A total of 1181 cases were registered against cattle smuggling, 633 vehicles were seized, 1356 smugglers were arrested and 12402 cattle were recovered.
The number of pending cases has also come down sharply to 58,908 at the end of 2022 compared to 95,994 cases in 2021 and over one lakh cases at the end of 2020.
The DGP said that the state police is making rapid use of technology and forensics while using scientific assistance in investigations and setting up new regional and mobile forensic science laboratories in different parts of the state as well as the state forensic laboratory here. Several steps are being taken to upgrade.
