Demanding halt to Arunachal dam projects sit-in protest at Tinsukia

Guwahati: Members of the Chatra Mukti Sangram Committee and the Mahila Mukti Sangram Committee from Tinsukia staged a sit-in protest outside the Tinsukia Commissioner’s office, voicing their strong opposition to the planned construction of 135 large river dams in Arunachal Pradesh.

The demonstrators, armed with various slogans, emphasized the need for an urgent reconsideration of the projects due to concerns over potential environmental and socio-economic impacts.

The protesters criticized the proposed dam constructions as unscientific and reckless, highlighting the absence of thorough studies on how these projects could affect downstream communities.

They argued that without proper environmental assessments, the projects pose significant risks, including potential flooding, displacement of local populations, and harm to aquatic ecosystems.

The sit-in aimed to draw attention to these pressing issues and called on the authorities to immediately suspend construction until comprehensive impact studies are conducted.

The demonstrators underscored the necessity of considering the implications on Assam’s lower regions, which could face severe consequences due to the upstream developments.

The protest was part of an ongoing movement to ensure that large-scale infrastructure projects in the region prioritize sustainable and informed decision-making processes.
